Renewable Energy Sector
Renewable Energy Sector:
Business Outlook :
India’s renewable energy sector is the fourth most attractive in the world and shall see GOI’s sustained commitment in the sector with various large-scale sustainable power projects coming up in the not-so-distant future. For this reason, RE has the potential to create employment at all levels, more so in rural areas. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has an ambitious target of generating to the tune of 175 GW by 2022 of which about 100 GW would come from solar, 60 from wind energy and the rest from a mix of hydro, bio and others.
In June of 2018, the GOI aimed to achieve a target of 225 GW of renewable energy by 2022, way ahead of its targeted 175 GW that it committed to the Paris Agreement. This sector is expected to attract investments of up to US$ 80 billion in the next four years.
It is expected that by the year 2040, close to 50% of the total electricity generated would be sourced from renewable energy with the use of extremely efficient batteries to store power. This would further reduce generation costs by 66 per cent as compared to the present.* Use of renewables in place of coal would save India INR 54,000 crore (US$ 8.43 billion) annually.
